2009 H1N1 Flu: Situation Update

Key Flu Indicators

Each week CDC analyzes information about influenza disease activity in the United States and publishes findings of key flu indicators in a report called FluView. During the week of September 27 - October 3, 2009, a review of the key indictors found that influenza activity increased in the United States. Below is a summary of the most recent key indicators:

  • Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) continued to increase in the United States, and overall, are higher than levels expected for this time of the year.
  • Total influenza hospitalization rates for laboratory-confirmed influenza are higher than expected for this time of year for adults and children. And for children 5-17 and adults 18-49 years of age, hospitalization rates from April – October 2009 exceed average flu season rates (for October through April).
  • The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) based on the 122 Cities Report has increased and now exceeds what is normally expected at this time of year. In addition, 19 flu-related pediatric deaths were reported this week; 16 of these deaths were confirmed 2009 H1N1 and 3 were unsubtyped influenza A and likely to be 2009 H1N1. A total of 76 laboratory confirmed 2009 H1N1 pediatric deaths have been reported to CDC since April.
  • Thirty-seven states are reporting widespread influenza activity at this time. They are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. Any reports of widespread influenza activity in September and October are very unusual.
  • Almost all of the influenza viruses identified so far are 2009 H1N1 influenza A viruses. These viruses remain similar to the virus chosen for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, and remain susceptible to the antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir with rare exception.

42 WAY'S TO GO GREEN AND SAVE.

42 Way's To Save.....

1. Switch 3 lights that you use for 4 hours a day with compact fluorescent bulbs.
2. Replace a porch light that’s always on with a compact fluorescent bulb.
3. Turn your heater thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in the summer.
4. Install a programmable thermostat to adjust your home’s heating and cooling automatically.
5. Make sure your walls and ceilings are well-insulated.
6. Air-dry your clothes in the spring and summer instead of using the dryer.
7. Set your water heater thermostat no higher than 120 F.
8. Replace bathroom and kitchen sink facets with low-flow models.
9. Install low-flow showerheads.
10. Go from 500 sheets of 0% recycled computer to 200 sheets of 100% recycled paper.
11. Drive less aggressively — don’t accelerate and brake rapidly.
12. Drive the speed limit.
13. Keep the tires on your car adequately inflated. Check them monthly.
14. Drive 10 miles less per week.
15. Carpool, take public transit, or telecommute one day per week instead of driving to work.
16. Replace your old refrigerator with a new Energy Star one.
17. Replace an old TV with a new Energy Star one.
18. Replace your old dishwasher with a new Energy Star one.
19. Replace an old computer, monitor, and printer with new Energy Star ones.
20. Replace your old washing machine with a new Energy Star one.
21. Recycle all steel (”tin”) cans, aluminum cans, and glass containers.
22. Take one less short domestic round-trip flight this year.
23. Take one less cross-country round-trip this year.
24. Use a washable mug for your morning coffee instead of a Styrofoam cup (assuming you can get a freebie coffee mug).
25. Get a reusable water bottle instead of disposables (again, assuming you can get a freebie water bottle).
26. Buy products in the largest size you can use to avoid excess packaging.
27. Use washable plates and utensils for takeout dinners and parties instead of paper and plastic goods.
28. Buy vintage clothes instead of new stuff at the mall.
29. Unplug electronics when you’re not using them.
30. Turn out the light when you leave the room.
31. Shut down your computer and peripherals each night.
32. Run the clothes washer with only full loads.
33. Wash your clothes in cold water.
34. Run the dishwasher with only full loads and let dishes air-dry.
35. Take showers instead of baths.
36. Take shorter showers.
37. Insulate your water heater.
38. Clean or replace dirty air-conditioner filters every three months.
39. Replace old windows with double-pane windows.
40. Use a push lawn mower instead of gas or electric.
41. Change your car’s air filter and check it monthly.
42. Turn off the car instead of idling.

Whew! All together, these options would save 7.38 tons of carbon dioxide per year, and all of them would save money in some fashion, either by reducing your energy bill, reducing your water bill, improving your gas mileage, cutting down on unnecessary things (like trips), reusing things more often, or by literally making money by recycling items. It’s very difficult to calculate exactly how much money you would save because of the variables, but these items will save money.

TAX INFORMATION - KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

Now that you have a home-based business, it's time to take advantage
of the TREMENDOUS tax advantages available to you! Nobody likes tax
time, but owning a home-based business can literally save you
thousands of dollars a year in taxes by allowing you to turn
personal expenses into legitimate, allowable business deductions.

The more tax deductions your business can legitimately take, the
lower its taxable profit will be. For example, if you earn $100,000
per year from your job and home-based business, combined, but have
15,000 in allowable business deductions, you would only pay taxes of
your net income of $85,000. At 30% tax rate, that could save you
$4,500 in federal taxes!

*************************************************
We recommend you talk to an accountant about allowable tax
deductions
, but here's some tax strategies to keep in mind:
*************************************************

Shaklee
The cost of at least the first 100 PV is 100% deductible, also
the price of the kit, whether it's the $299 or the $19.95. A lot
of people also write off the first time they buy anything because
it's a demo. Others write off everything they buy personally
because it's a vital part of their business.

Auto Expenses
You can either keep track of and deduct all your actual business-
related expenses, or simply deduct 50.5 cents per mile from Jan. 1,
2008, to June 30, 2008, (up 2 cents from 2007). The rate is 58.5
cents for each mile driven during the rest of 2008. Keep track of
mileage & how the vehicle is used.

Education/Training Expenses
Costs of training meetings, training programs and manuals, books,
online training subscriptions, etc.
Also deduct Legal and Professional Fees, (Fees you pay lawyers,
tax professionals or consultants).

Business Entertaining
You may deduct 50% of the cost for entertaining existing or
prospective customers, if it is either "directly related" to the
business, and business is discussed, or "associated with" the
business, and the entertainment takes place immediately before or
after a business discussion. (Keep notes of the people involved
and the business purpose.)

Travel
When you travel for business, you can deduct many expenses,
including the cost of plane fare, costs of operating your car,
rental cars, taxis, lodging, meals, shipping business materials,
dry cleaning, telephone calls, faxes and tips. It's OK to combine
business and pleasure as long as business is the primary purpose
of the trip. If you take your family along, you can deduct only
your expenses, just as if you had traveled alone.

Interest and carrying charges on credit cards and business loans
are fully tax-deductible.

Computers and Software
You can now write off a whole computer system in the year that
it was purchased if the total cost is less than $25,000, and if
it is used exclusively for business purposes. (IRC Sec. 179) In
most instances, software bought for business use must be
depreciated over a 36-month period, unless you can demonstrate
that it has a useful life of less than one year.

Charitable Contributions are deductible
Rules vary depending on whether you are an LLC, partnership,
S corporation, or regular (C) corporation, the corporation can
deduct the charitable contributions.

Advertising
All expenses involved in advertising or promoting your business
are deductible, i.e. business cards, classified ads, yellow pages,
brochures and flyers, etc. Also includes signs for home or car,
event signage, extra websites, etc.

Household Expenses
This can be one of your most valuable deductions. To qualify, a
percentage of your home must be used "exclusively and on a regular
basis" for your business. (It doesn't have to be an entire room.)
Hints: Have your address on your business cards and stationery, have
a photo of you in your office, holding a newspaper to validate the
date, and keep a log of what you're doing in your office.

Often Overlooked Expenses:

Business expenses related to your health & wellness business, like
the make up kit, Air source, any team or church donations in your
business name. Products you buy to let others sample, or share at
social or business events with your business advertised.

If you own your home, you can depreciate a percentage of all
acquisition costs of your house and home improvements over a period
of 39 years. You can depreciate 100% of expenditures and improvement
costs to your office space.

A percent of all household expenses, including property taxes,
mortgage interest, homeowner's insurance, utilities, property
maintenance, alarm systems, snow removal, grass cutting, etc.

Office furniture and equipment - Have you bought any desks, chairs,
computers, files, lamps...Up to $20,000 in business furniture and
equipment can be deducted in one year.

Homeowner's insurance, utilities and related expenses based on the
percentage of their use in the home office.

Household maintenance - Repairs to your home office are fully
deductible. Repairs to the whole house would be deducted on a
percentage basis.

Snow removal and lawn maintenance, even a percentage of your
landscaping.

Don't Miss These Miscellaneous Deductible Items:

Sales aids, i.e. audio and videotapes, CDs, DVDs, books, etc.
related to your business.

Bank service charges - you can avoid these by getting a free
checking account
. 100 % deductions for hiring children or grand
children - pay them up to $4500 per year. (They pay less %)

Business gifts - up to $25 purchased for customer or distributor -
even if they're related to you.

Business-related magazines and books

Casual labor and tips

Casualty and theft losses

Coffee and beverage service

Office supplies - paper, toner, clips, tape, staples, etc.

Online computer services related to business - lead generation,
IR HomeSites, etc.

Parking and meters

Photocopies - handouts, flyers, training materials, etc.

Postage - stamps or shipping on anything sent to partner or
customer or prospect

Stationery - cards - even holiday cards to above

Seminars and trade show fees - monthly team dues, meeting charges
or tickets for all events

Taxi, train, shuttle and bus fare

Telephone calls and phone cards when away from the business

We've been told a dog is a security system for your business - therefore deductible

NOTE: If there's a possibility you may sell your house, talk to
your accountant about the tax ramifications. "Unless 100% of your
home qualifies as a principal residence for at least two of the
five years preceding the sale, you'll have to pay capital gains
tax
on the business portion of your home."

You need residual income

So what is this residual income thing? Is it available to everyone?

Residual income is money earned today on the work you have done in the past. Which means, you can live the life of your dreams and still earn an income to support it while you do.
And yes, it is available to everyone when it comes to building a Shaklee business.

It's really pretty simple in Shaklee to build a residual income. It's simple, but not easy. You do need to invest some time up front in training to learn a few secrets about this fast growing industry. But if done right, you will reach the point where you will never have to work another day in your life!

More people than ever before in history are entering this
industry, mostly due to the baby boomer group. This group
will be the largest group in history to ever reach retirement
age at the same time. The sad part about this is that many
of them will not be ready for it. Many boomers will have to
continue to work in their retirement days to earn an income
due to poor retirement planning. Some planned well but the
cost of living will increasingly eat up their retirement
funds they do have. Still others will want to stay active
doing something with a challenge yet fun and on their own
time and in their control.

A home-based business of their own continues to be on the
top of their list. More people today are starting up a home-
based business in Network Marketing because it offers the
average person an opportunity to earn above average income.
No special schooling needed because you learn as you earn.

Look at some of the facts:
· A new home-based business opens every ten seconds. · 25% of North America is involved in some sort of home business. · The average home-based business generates over $50,000 yearly in income, while the average working wage is only $22,000 in North America.

Did you know that 9 of 10 families now need two working
members to just make ends meet? Surveys indicate that 85%
of all North Americans would like to own their own business.
Anyone can build a Shaklee income if they want or need more
money to support their family. Most people don't really
understand it and when they do, they have a hard time
believing they could earn it. So they end up just enjoying
the products but miss taking any action to find out if it
can be real for them.

The illustration below will help you understand why
Network Marketing continues to grow now on a global
basis and at a very excitingly fast rate.

Keep in mind that what goes up in smoke or down the drain,
is where you get the greatest gain. So because of Shaklee
products being a consumable product line, everyone using
the products each month and buying replacements the next
month, it is one of the best businesses for earning residual
income.

The chart below makes the following assumptions:
1. It's a geometric formula.
2. This process is based on adding three new representatives
who duplicate the same process through only 8 levels deep.
Each person finds 3 who each find 3 who do the same.
3. Each Representative uses just 100 PV in products per month.

Level Representatives Product Volume
1 3 400 PV
2 9 900 PV = 1,300 GPV
3 27 2,700 PV = 4,000 GPV
4 81 8,100 PV = 12,100 GPV
5 243 24,300 PV = 36,400 GPV
6 729 72,900 PV = 109,300 GPV

Naturally you might be thinking, but this is "hypothetical,"
I could never expect to build an organization that large.
It won't happen overnight, but it can happen with Shaklee,
a company that has a 50 year history and people have been
reaping these benefits for decades. The results speak for
themselves, both physical and financial.

It's true that individual results will vary, but if you've
been around network marketing at all, then you're probably
already aware that many representatives have and do build
large organizations of hundreds, even thousands of people
like this all the time. Some of the top leaders in Shaklee
are making $40,000 to over $100,000 per month! The average
income at the top in Shaklee is $280,000 per year. That is
over 8 times the average income level in all of the U.S.!

Shaklee business growth is a living thing and takes on a
life of it's own with time and effort. It is already
happening right now as you read this for a lot of
average people all around the world. Why not you?

If you still find it hard to believe, here is something you
can get your teeth into:

What if you were only 10% this successful? You would still
earn an income of over $2,800 per month! That's over
$33,000/yr! Almost the average income in the U.S. and
remember, that's if only part time and only 10% successful!

If that doesn't get your juices flowing and help you begin
to see this as possible for you, then maybe this one will:

Once you build your income to whatever you want it to be
earning per year, you can then stop working if you like but
you will continue to earn this income well into your future.
Better yet, you will see an increase in your income each year
afterwards as others who you have trained continue to work
on their goals as you have done.

That's Lifestyle!

Eat More, Feel Full, Lose Weight

When it comes to weight loss, one of the biggest challenges is managing our appetite. We eat for so many reasons, in addition to hunger, that it can be really tough to get a sense of fullness and contentment while trimming calories (which is a fact of life when it comes to losing weight). So, how about a little refresher on how to eat more food, while still saving calories? That's the topic of my Today Show segment today.

It's all about fiber, water, and air. When these are in the foods you choose, you'll get automatic "calorie dilution". Since fiber, water, and air have no digestable calories, you'll get a "bulking up" of the food volume you eat, without adding any extra calories. Here are some of my favorites. What are some of yours?

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: These are double duty foods, and contain lots of fiber and water. Most diet plans have raw vegetables on the "unlimited" list. (The only exclusions are the low-water, starchy veggies like corn, peas, and potatoes). From salad greens, to colorful fruits and vegetables, water and fiber give you a boost in stomach distention (filling up!) - translated into a greater sense of fullness for you. Shop local and seasonal for best prices, and consider frozen veggies (skip the sauces) for best savings.

Whole Grains: Aim for fiber rich products to give you greater fullness on a smaller serving. That's the key to whole grains and weight control. Choose 100% whole wheat in small sizes - mini pitas, thin sliced bread. And don't forget about brown rice, quinoa, and couscous. Think high fiber, low-sugar cereals with skim milk, or plain, as a snack. If you won't consider whole grains, look for white flour products with extra fiber added as a backup.

Popcorn: The key calorie dilution here comes from air. The pop in popcorn "fluffs" up the product, and provides volume wihtou extra calories. So, you get a lot more to eat, compared with regular corn. Look for 100-cal air-popped microwaveable bags, and skip the flavored varieties that add lots of extra calories and fat.

Beverages: Non-Alcoholic and Alcoholic: Liquids are a great filler, but adding air - think carbonation that gives you some fizz, and slows down your rate of drinking, and also gives added volume without calories. For non-alcoholic choices, think seltzer, club soda, or diet soda. When it comes to alcoholic drinks, try sparkling wine, or a wine spritzer (wine and seltzer), The fizz of a light beer makes you drink it slower - and is more "filling" for most people, so you can limit your consumption with less trouble.

Soups: Whether hot or cold, soup is a great alternate to start a meal, to help take the edge off your hunger. This occurs when you get a small sense of fullness with the fiber and water of soups, that allow you better control when eating your main dish. You're just not as hungry when the main dish comes, since you get a satiety boost from the soup. A great alternate to salads - which many people also use as an appetizer, but can get a bit tiring. Stick with chunky vegetable soups, or gazpacho, and limit cream- and noodle-based soups. Create (or purchase) your own "cream" soups using vegetable purees; try Imagine brand, in a box, for a ready-to-eat bowl.

Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins
---------------------------------------------------
Solutions for Varicose Veins/Dr. Brouse

Varicose veins during pregnancy in an otherwise healthy
woman is a common occurrence. Because of Homo sapiens
posture
, gravity forces the engorged uterus firmly into
the pelvis where the iliac veins are compressed and back
up (actually down) into the femoral and tibial areas in
the legs. These tips might be helpful, otherwise see a
nutritionally oriented doctor for specific advice.

We have observed varicosity's with women who also tend to
be constipated and often have hemorrhoids. Small amounts
of Herb Lax (1/2 to 1 tablet from one to 4 times each day)
has been helpful. Usually, Vita E (800 to 1,200 IU daily),
Vita C (500 to 1,500 mg daily) and GLA (3 to 9 capsules
each day) are useful to reduce the throbbing or heavy
feeling when varicose veins are at their worst.

I have observed women who are low in B Complex (does her
ankles or hands swell) and Calcium & Magnesium (do the
varicose veins instantly feel better when the feet are
elevated or do her leg or feet muscles cramp at night?)
respond literally over night when the dosage is raised
to the necessary amount.

If the above situations do not fit the picture, the use
of Nurse - grade elastic stockings which come all the
way up the leg worn when walking 1 to 2 miles each day
(yes even on the 8th month; Jennie walked this much up
to and including the day of delivery with all 3 of our
children) can be very helpful.

Performance (Sport Drink in Canada) supplementation is
helpful for electrolyte balance, energy and endurance.

Varicose veins tend to also show up typically during
senior years due to dehydration, and lack of exercise.

Good luck,
Dr. Brouse
